Social media describes environments where users produce content that is shared with other users to be consumed or interacted with. This content might take the form of writing, ideas, photos, videos, or various other things. They often include a Aspect:social network component. They are often symmetric with regards to who can engage in what types of interaction.

Contrast to news media or traditional media where a centralized publisher produces content to be consumed by users and there is little to no communication in the other direction.
